As I have worked in the industry for years now, I have found that it is the least known yet highest potential security processes that will end up holding the greatest value in Cyber Security sometimes does not get the media time that it needs. Take for instance Homomorphic encryption. Homomorphic encryption was the buzz in 2014 on solving the encryption and decryption and re-encryption in data security. What this method was to provide is the ability in performing calculations on encrypted information without decryption of the data first. The model of encryption that the private sector uses today exposes the protected information while the data is being manipulated.
Homomorphic is still in the research stage of development. There is the partial usage of homomorphic encryption models being used. however, a fully optimized homomorphic encryption system is yet to be realized. The original development of the Homomorphic encryption model was developed in 2009 by an IBM researcher named Craig Gentry this gentleman developed the first fully homomorphic encryption scheme. however, at the time Gentry’s method had an immense computational overhead. I think it is time to move this encryption model to the cloud, where computational overhead is not an issue. And we can begin to really protect data in transit.
